From assembling and operating, train sets are enjoyed by people of all ages. Kids often find colorful train sets more appealing whereas serious model train hobbyists acquire the latest model trains from their trusted hobby store.

Collecting train sets is a form of leisure that is popular throughout the world. They also make good gifts whether the receiver is a child or an adult. Since these are train sets, they are factory-made which makes them easy to assemble.

Sizes also vary in model trains and train sets and these are categorized in scales and gauges. These scales are Z, N, H0, S, 0, and G. Out of these six scale sizes, the most standard is the H0 which is in the midpoint of the size ranges. The next most popular scale is 0 or 00 which is a little bigger than the H0. Numerous collectors in the UK favor the 00 scale. The smallest scale size is the Z and the biggest scale is the G and are frequent in fairs and exhibitions. The N scale is also gradually becoming more common thanks to the relatively cheaper price and smaller size.

In an average train set that is regularly packaged in a box, there should be inclusion of certain parts for a train set to be called a train set. These sets will not be complete without any of the following: the locomotive, couplers, tracks, and power pack.

Train sets will not even be called train set without the locomotive. Tain sets will be inanimate without its heart which is the locomotive. Model locomotives could either be modeled after the classic steam locomotives, diesel-electric locomotives or even the modern electric ones. Model locomotives that are created for die-hard hobbyists are made to simulate real-life engine audios like the chugging and whistling and visual concepts like lights and steam smoke.

Couplers are used to link up the locomotive, trains and other rail cars and give them the lengthening and flexibility they need, particularly when turning.

The tracks come with straight and bent segments. Lots of train sets include tracks that form a circle or an oval. These tracks are made for the average market (depending on the scale) and can be expanded by adding additional sections of tracks which are accessible in a good number of hobby shops.

Lastly, the power pack is the piece that makes it possible for the locomotive and the train to go forward. Power packs usually have a 6-12 voltage and come with controllers. Choosing whether a power pack should be analog or digital depends on the person. Regardless of the choice, it should be able to move your model train forward and backward, speed up or slow down, and stop and go. One particular feature of some power packs is the fail-safe feature which shuts down automatically if it detects an electrical problem. This makes it a child-friendly toy.

Slot car racing is a popular indoor hobby activity in countries in the western hemisphere. These small but fast toy cars run along slotted tracks where power transmitted by electric current moves each car positioned on the track. Slot cars have metallic blades which fit to the bottom of these slots. Numerous enthusiasts of slot cars hold racing contest but there are enthusiasts who are more focused in creating sceneries, modeling roads and highways, and simulating urban and rural traffic.

Enthusiasts of slot cars that are new to the thing begin with standard made cars that are offered in any hobby store. Commercialy-made slot cars are made for improved performance on standard tracks. Aficionados of slot cars for years habitually assemble cars from scratch or modify their collection and tailor them to incorporate individual styling as well as aerodynamic qualities.

A lot of slot car hobbyists also get pleasure from modeling each of their cars after popular real car models such as those from Ford, Ferrari, and BMW. Just like real cars, slot cars also have replaceable rubber tires and the modification of the chassis and the motor is to make them more faster and make them more stylish. The highest speed of which slot cars can reach can be from 1000 to 1800 revolutions per minute (rpm).

The system to operate these miniature cars is by a single-handed controller that’s only function is to regulate the voltage of the electric motor inside the car. Slot car evolutions has largely been with the model cars and controllers but the track practically remained the same ever since the 1950s. Slot car tracks originally separate cars by the slots but new developments have made it viable for cars to share lanes in a race. The challenge for slot car racers comes on the curved sections where the voltage being fed to the car should be correctly adjusted with the correct squeeze on the controller to prevent de-slotting or lose momentum that will make the racer lose the race.

Much like model trains, slot cars have the same concept in terms of setup. Slot car and model train aficionados construct the track range, make sceneries which include trees and small structures. The only distinction is the variation of speed between model trains and slot cars and model trains is essentially a solo operation while slot cars is designed for the enjoyment of several people racing one another.

Slot cars are not just limited to cars only. Trucks and even motorcycles are also made to be able to cruise tracks for slot cars. Scale sizes such as 1:24, 1:32 and H0 are the most common scale sizes for slot cars.

Traction magnets, which provide downforce to a slot car, are attached to prevent de-slotting particularly during high speeds on tight corners. The use of traction magnets on slot car races are not given much significance since plenty of slot car racers consider them not as enjoyable as those without them. Slot cars that doesn’t have traction magnets have a tendency to drift and de-slotting could happen more which plenty of racers prefer to have for added entertainment.

One of the most small but annoying problem with model train hobby is derailments. Figuring out the chief source of the derailment can also be very difficult and frustrating if several segments of the tracks get affected. One particular cause of model train derailments are dirt and dust and cleaning tracks, engines and cars is one easy way to resolve derailment issues by means of elimination process. Do some trial runs and if all goes pleasantly, then it was just a small thing that caused it and the it’s a lucky run for the model train enthusiast.

A small but irritating model train problem comes in the form of derailment. Finding the reason can also eat up a lot of time and effort particularly if it turns out on more than one track section. Dirt or dusts is one factor that can cause derailments and cleaning tracks, engines and cars is the simplest measure to do in zeroing in on the problem. After cleaning what needs to be cleaned, run your model train once more and if the derailment doesn’t happen anymore, then the derailment probably originated due to grimy bits and pieces.

If the derailment goes on, there is possibly a much deeper cause especially if it happens in one portion and thorough investigation will be essential to isolate the source of the problem. Apart from the arrangement and positioning of the tracks, other factors to take into account are the sceneries and the locomotives and cars. Being broad-minded is important in situations like this as the area where the derailment happens may not always be the problem.

Ensure that no small or big piece of sceneries are obstructing the tracks. Track nails and joints should also be inspected meticulously. Nails should have a packed fit on where they are seated and loose ones should be examined right away and adjusted if it's called for.

Model train derailments can also be affected by moving pieces. Disconnect all cars and wagons and just run the model locomotive by itself. If the derailment occurs in just one section over and over, then the track’s positioning or alignment might be the culprit. Level your sights down the particular track section because it could be slanted in a certain angle which your locomotive can’t handle especially if the locomotive’s wheels are not magnetized. If that particular track is curved, it could also contribute to model train derailment.

Potential derailments can be caused by tight track curves and it is also important to consider the locomotive’s axle count and also the limit of cars that can be connected to the locomotive. Model locomotives with six axles usually require a curve radius of 22 degrees and going much curvier would most likely derail the model train. How many cars can be connected should also be considered since centripetal force and inertia could be factors in derailment especially in tight turns at fast speeds. Other unplanned inconsistencies like bumps or dips should also be sorted as these could cause tilts and jumps.

If there’s no problem with the position of the tracks, each cars and wagons should be checked thoroughly especially their couplers, axles and wheels. Couplers should be mounted properly and should not be too low and all wheels should easily turn. The width of the wheels should also be properly set according to the track’s width. If there is one or several wheel or coupling that is loose or tight, the basic solution is to re-mount them. If derailment still occurs after re-mounting, it might be time to replace them with new ones. Once more, never forget to clean every wheel.

Given that derailment problems can be due to a lot of causes, patience and diligence is valuable towards zeroing-in on it and getting it fixed. Technical and problem solving skills are just some qualities needed for a model train hobbyist and every configuration and repair accomplished is part of the satisfaction model trains bring.

Thomas and Friends is a conception of the British television way of life inspired by the model train craze in the country and its initial episode aired on British TV in 1984. Shepperton Studios was responsible for its production and the initial title of the show “Thomas and Friends” was later on changed to “Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends” in 2003.

The show is based on the book written by Reverend W.V. Awdry, The Railway Series, which highlight talking trains and other vehicles. All through the years, British and American celebrities have been featured as narrators and a few renowned ones among them were Ringo Starr, Pierce Brosnan, George Carlin and Alec Baldwin.

Distribution and merchandising have made Thomas and Friends a household name and children’s favorite. From shirts, mugs, blankets, bed sheets, and of course, model trains.

Life-size steam engines were even made after Thomas and Friends for special occasions by Heritage Railways. Commonly named as ”Day out with Thomas,” an event like this was organised to attract visitors and tourists. Passengers and their kids are given rides on these television-inspired locomotives and provides Heritage Railways added revenues. Model trains are made after real locomotives, but because of Thomas and Friends, that norm has been reversed and real trains were made after model trains.

In the initial years of the show, every episode was shot in a studio using live animation using model trains. Compared to other kids' shows that employ inanimate objects and making them move through stop-motion animation, Thomas and Friends used stationary characters and the type of animation given to these characters is by changing their facial expressions with interchangeable faces and the movement of the model trains themselves. Voices and speeches of each character always differ seeing as guest storytellers are the one providing them.

This animation practice all changed when the show was acquired by HIT Entertainment. Even though they still used actual model trains, facial expressions, lip movements, people and animal characters are done by way of CGI.

Even with this type of improvement the show has received, there are lots of people, especially those who grew-up watching it, are reminiscing to watch 80’s episodes of the show because of its unique and plain way of animation.

One of the factors that enable Thomas and Friends to have enjoyable stories and brilliant scenery is due to its vast model railway layout. Thomas the tank engine and his train friends were originally made by German Toy maker Marklin and the scale size of the locomotives is at 1:32 or Gauge 1 the gauge of the tracks used measure 44.45mm. Movable eyes along with smoke generators were the basic special attributes of the model locomotives for the show.

The fact that Thomas and his friends has been a popular kids show for a lot of countries around the world is undeniable. Kids of the 80s have always stay tuned when it was originally broadcast in 1984 and millions of young audiences of today are still captivated by Thomas the Tank Engine.

Model trains enthusiasts and kids alike will like Thomas and his friends as gifts or as part of their collection and Hornby is able to grant this satisfaction with its Hornby R9071 Thomas the Tank Engine Train Set.

The 60163 Tornado can be compared to restoring classic cars of yester-decades but instead of getting salvaging it for its parts and body, the Tornado is a steam engine assembled from top to bottom in the modern age in 2008.

Why Tornado? With respects to the sponsor who gave £50,000, it was given the privilege to select the name for the locomotive. Since the first gulf war was fresh on each person’s thoughts that time, it was decided to provide the locomotive a name honoring the RAF pilots who flew the British-made fighter aircraft also named the Tornado. Therefore, the name “Tornado.”

At some stage in the frame laying ceremony in January 1995, The RAF presented several Tornado nameplates to A1 Steam Locomotive Trust.

In the 1990s, a number of individuals and organizations in Britain combined their resources to re-establish and give new life to steam locomotives in Britain’s preserved classic railways. A trust foundation known as A1 Steam Locomotive Trust and its subsidiary, Locomotive Construction Co., coordinated and built the Tornado as part of the locomotive heritage movement.

Past and present meet as the Tornado is built. The steam-powered technology of the Tornado may be obsolete but all of the parts and pieces are made with turn of the millennium methods and apparatuses. But the Tornado’s construction did not come at a low-cost. When the project was still being planned, the initial cost for the Tornado was at £1.6 million but because of rising costs brought by inflation and price increases, the cost almost doubled at £3 million and the Tornado was finished two years after the initial schedule.

The first test run of the Tornado happened in July 29, 2008 at Darlington along Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire on the Great Central Railway in Loughborough, a preserved double-track railway with working signals and intended to entertain tourists.

The Tornado’s velocity reached up to 121 km/h (75 mph) and its Apple Green repainting is its last phase of being endorsed as a main-line passenger train. In January 31, 2009, the Tornado made its first run to transport passengers. The cost to assemble the Tornado created debt for its makers and making it a passenger train is a way to be able to repay those debts.

A steam engine train like the Tornado can reach speeds of up to 160 kmh but seeing as its intent is more of for show than hauling, it’s only limited to 140 kmh.

The Tornado’s original color was grey and the logo on the side of its coal-car originally have A1 Trust’s website painted on it. When the color of the Tornado was repainted to apple green to commemorate the locomotives in the 1940s, the coal-car’sinsignia were changed to British Railways.

The painting of the Tornado was conducted by the National Railway Museum (NRM) with 500 sponsors watching the train being painted without the use of modern-aged spray-paints but with just paintbrushes.

Because of the the effort and the amount of resources poured in the Tornado’s building, Bachmann has commemorated this new age classic in one of their limited edition model trains collection. The Bachmann 32-550A Class A1 60163 ‘Tornado’ has captured every detail of the life-size Tornado and this model locomotives will provide any model trains collector a feeling of satisfaction and money-well-spent.

Plenty of model trains and model train designs were fashioned after trains that changed transportation and development around the world. This facet has provided all kinds of model trains a type of a sentimental value amongst model train hobbyists.

Trains that were the engineering spectacles of their time may now have been placed in museums but they have all been commemorated in tiny scale model locomotives that by now are running down on millions of homes around the world.

Even TV shows committed to trains are now a common program particularly those for kids. Two specific television shows for kids about model trains are Chuggington and Thomas and Friends.

Locomotives and trains have come a long way ever since the birth of its first kind in the 19th century. For almost 200 years, locomotives have evolved in form, mechanism, power and velocity. Makers of model trains produce scale models that are derived regularly on two types of locomotives and these are steam and diesel-electric locomotives.

Steam Trains

Steam locomotives are history’s forefront for mechanized transportation and freight. This kind of locomotive move along by coal-burning to heat water and the steam created gives the steam locomotive its power and velocity. While steam locomotives are not as sleek, fast, and powerful as the modern trains we benefit from nowadays, they are more common because of their sentimental value and their memorable form is what makes steam locos appealing than other model trains modeled after modern locomotives.

Diesel Electric Trains

Diesel electric locomotives are the next generation locomotives that provided better efficiency and momentum. Though they were invented in the early 20th century, these locomotives are still used today by rich and poor [countries~nations} alike. Next to steam locomotives, diesel-electric locomotives have a popular model train fan base.

Different sizes in model trains are classified in scales and gauges and the scales that dig up the most fan base are H0 and 00. Because of their popularity, these scales have become a standard measurement for a margin of model train collectors. 00 scale is popular in Europe, particularly in Britain. In the US and Canada, the popular scale among aficionados is H0.

Different model train manufacturers such as Bachmann, Bassett-Lowke, and Hornby are keen to provide model train enthusiasts the sets and collections they want to get their hands on. A lot of their model trains are modeled after popular steam and diesel locomotives of various models and classes. Each scale model train created also come in limited numbers to make them collector’s items and give them more value as time passes.

There are lots of model train brands out there but the one that stands out the most is the name Hornby. Innovation, standardization, and interchangeability are just a few of the terms that can illustrate Hornby and its merchandise which can be traced down and credited to its founder Frank Hornby.}Frank Hornby is a toy maker who modernized the method of manufacturing toys by offering interchangeability to the toys he made during the early 20th century. The Hornby Railways Company was founded by Frank Hornby and is one of the leading manufacturers of not just model trains and railways, but other forms of scale models as well.

The company Frank Hornby began at first wasn’t named as Hornby Railways Co. Instead, Hornby started a small manufacturing company he named Meccano Ltd. in 1908 and in less than two years, the company made revenues that enabled Hornby to set up more Meccano factories in other parts of Europe.

Hornby has patented what is established as “Improvements in Toy or Educational Devices for Children and Young People” seven years earlier and brought forward construction equipment scale models such as winches and trucks. The unique attribute that Hornby’s scale models has is the manner of how they can be interchanged. Later on, Hornby change the title for his scale models as “Mechanics Made Easy.” This is the type of innovative idea Hornby products is known for which also started a widespread standard scale size for model trains.

Meccano even sustained their manufacture even during the first world war. Hornby has also presented a new lineup of model train products which were incorporated with clockwork motors imported from a German company known as Marklin which in addition manufactured Meccano products under license in Germany. Hornby’s manufacture of model trains, however, was suspended throughout World War II. Production resumed when the war ended but production of model trains under the Meccano brand name ceased.

Electric powered model trains powered by 100-250 volts electricity were launched in 1925 which was soon after switched to 6 volts DC to make it more safer. Production and launch of a 00 scale, 12 volt DC model trains started in the 1930s and is now the most well-liked kind of scale in the UK.

Widely held railroading models from Hornby Railways are recognized as Lyddle End and Skaledale. Although both have similarities when it comes to accessories, the Lyddle End has a scale of 1:76 which is slightly bigger than the Skaledale. These two main models are modeled after specific places in England. Much of these models consist of sceneries and structures carefully looked at from the two zones.

All over the world, Hornby model trains are well known. Mainly countries in Europe, North America, and Australia.

The endeavor of Hornby to establish a factory in the United States during the 1920s was not as lucrative as other Hornby sites in Europe. Hornby aimed to manufacture model trains modeled after American trains but one-dimensional clockwork motors and the 1929 stock market crash forced Hornby to halt the venture completely.

Model train afficionados these days are patrons of Hornby model trains. The reliability, durability and quality of Hornby scale models made it possible for model train enthusiasts to enjoy and take pride of their model train collections and how they create their track layouts and wirings.

From a straightforward child’s toy, to popular collectible that gets yearly meetings all over the world, model trains and railways have become a prominent custom in hobbying. The artistic and technical qualities that come with them is what let any collector enjoy and work his model trains.

Creativity in model trains consist of the crafting of little sceneries and structures that include foliage, tunnels, and stations. Attention to details is another artistic concept that come with model train collection.

For the model train’s technical aspect, the wire setup of the model train and railway is what makes each model locomotive and train accelerate. With these things, model train collectors get pleasure and satisfaction in having to own these not so cheap collectibles.

As you already know, model steam locomotives are powered by electricity. But do you know how actual steam trains work? Model trains glide through the tracks by flow of electicity just like modern electric trains from light rails and subways, but their real counterparts use steam to drift through the tracks. How do steam locomotives harness power from burning coal?

To make a steam locomotive start in the 1800s, what an engineer does initially is to release the brakes, followed by steam released gradually. Directing power needs cooperation among the engineer and another man (fireman) or two that will shovel coal from the tender to the boiler. It’s important to have coordination between the engineer and the fireman in order to make the locomotive run constantly and at optimum velocity. Approximately 1 ton of coal is burned in an hour.

Fire as intense as 2500 degrees burns the shoveled coal in the boiler. Surrounding the firebox is a hollow partition that will confine water. It is of great magnitude to surround the firebox with water as this not only fuels the locomotive but it also prevent the melting of the firebox.

The steam goes up to the locomotive’s steam dome where the throttle from the engineer’s cabin is connected. Freed steam is regulated by the throttle lever that is handled by the engineer and this is brought down to the cylinder of the locomotive. Pistons inside the cylinder link up to the rods that are attached in the wheels. The steam then pushes the piston inside the cylinder frontwards and backward which makes the whole train run.

For a hobbyist who utilizes a DCC for working their model trains, he controls a throttle which resembles a steam locomotive throttle. When a specific order in the throttle is pressed, it transmits a signal to the command station, which is like the steam dome, and it sends out a digital packet to the booster.

The booster, which is the equivalent of a steam loco’s cylinder, adjusts the power being circulated to the model railway that makes the wheel of the model locomotive turn.

Now that you have an insight on how a real steam locomotive operate, you can now visualize yourself performing the duties of an engineer back in the 1800s.
