The Hornby R8249 NMRA Certified four function decoder is capable of "picking up" the control signals from the "Hornby Elite" and "Hornby Select" or any other digital system and converting them into actions which includes moving forward and reversing at a determined speed, stopping and starting. It will also switch on or off the locomotive's lights if fitted.

The Hornby R8249 decoder is also capable of keeping the locomotive running at a set speed no matter what gradients  the model encounters.

Most new models come with a socket positioned inside the locomotive which the decoder is simply plugged into.  However, some older models do not have a socket, but it is a relatively simple task to fit a decoder and the basic instructions are included with the "Hornby Select" and "Hornby Elite" and give a basic illustration of how to fit a decoder to a model that does not have a factory fitted socket.

Features of the Four Function Hornby R8249 Locomotive Decoder

  • NMRA Certification
  • Load Compensation (Back EMF):

Locomotive will run at a constant speed regardless of the gradient.

Adjustable acceleration and deceleration.

  • Selectable for operation with 14, 28 or 128 steps:

The greater the number of steps, the smoother the acceleration. All Hornbt decoders are factory set at 128 steps.

  • Four On/Off function outputs:

Two of the function outputs are dedicated for the direction of lights - front and rear.

  • Analogue operation:

Locomotives that are fitted with a decoder can also run conventionally on a DC system but without the features of digital control.

  • Overload cutout:

The Hornby decoder is rated at 500mA continuous current and 1 Amp for a short period.  If this is exceeded then the decoder will overload and cut out.  This prevents damage to the decoder and the locomotive.

  • Dimensions:

17mm x 10mm x 3.5mm
